  Part-Time On-Call Fire Fighter
The City of Dowagiac is accepting applications for the part-time-on-call position of Fire Fighter at the Dowagiac Municipal Fire Department. Applicants must possess knowledge, skill and the ability to perform fire fighting work in the protection of life and property; the ability to operate and assist in maintaining fire equipment, apparatus and facilities; and to perform related work as required. Work is performed under the supervision of a superior officer. Reasonable knowledge of the geography, streets and principal locations within the City required. Valid Drivers License, State of Michigan Fire Fighter Level I Certification required or must obtain a Fire Fighter Level I Certification within 2 years of hire. Status: On-Call; hourly rate of pay: $8.00

JOB DESCRIPTION:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To perform fire fighting work in the protection of life and property; to operate and assist in maintaining fire fighting equipment, apparatus and facilities; to participate in rescue and fire prevention activities; and to perform related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the supervision of a superior officer.

STATUS: Part-Time On-Call

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this classification may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)

Operate all fire department related equipment.

Respond to all fire calls and perform standard fire fighting practices.

Knowledge of all departmental Policies and Procedures and Department Standard Operating Guidelines.

Operate fire fighting apparatus, pumps and other auxiliary fire equipment.

Respond to emergency calls requiring the use of rescue equipment.

Remove persons from danger and administer first aid as necessary.

Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of a fire station, clean and wash walls, care for grounds and make minor repairs.

Wash, hang and dry hose.

Wash, clean, polish and inspect fire apparatus and related equipment.

Participate in fire prevention inspections.   

Make periodic inspections of hydrants.

Prepare fire reports and other records as required.

Participate in overhaul and salvage operations.

Participate in drills and other departmental training functions.

Perform related work as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Reasonable knowledge of the geography, streets and principal locations within the City.

Reasonable fire fighting experience.

Valid drivers license and good driving history.

Reasonable knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.

Mechanical aptitude and mental alertness.

Physically sound and active.

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Good communication skills both oral and written.

Willingness to perform any assigned task.

Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the general public and other employees.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to perform frequent lifting of 70 lbs. as well as ability to sustain physical exertion. Ability to lift and/or move up to 100 lbs. and perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time. Vision requirements include close, distance, and color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Regularly uses hands to finger, handle, feel and operate objects, tools or controls, in addition to reaching with hands and arms. Frequently will be required to stand, talk, and hear. Also will be required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and smell.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

A high level of manual dexterity to perform hand control operations of office equipment, tools, machines, fire fighting equipment and work aids which may be representative, but not all inclusive of those associated with this type of work, such as: vehicles and equipment, ladders, shovels, axes, hooks and lifelines.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Ability to perform work activities in both an indoor and an outdoor environment in a safe manner by adhering to safety procedures and universal precautions to minimize hazards. Ability to perform duties in all types of weather conditions and various site conditions. Will work near mechanical moving parts. May be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat or cold, vibration or risk of electric shock. The noise level is usually loud.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: An employee in this classification, upon appointment, shall have the following training:

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED certificate.

Fire Fighter Level I Certificate preferred, or must complete Fire Fighter Level I Certificate within 2 years of hire date.

May be required to attend classes and/or become certified in areas of responsibilities.
