Emergency Preparedness
As an emergency services providers, utility providers and concerned community leaders, it is not only our goal, but also our responsibility to ensure a level of safety and preparedness for our citizens. With that in mind, the City of Dowagiac has established an Emergency Action Plan.

The plan provides for an organized response to emergency situations in order to restore public services and coordinate resources on behalf of our residents. Several officials and department heads from within the City have received specialized training from the Nation's foremost authority on emergencies—the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Washington, D.C.

The Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Dowagiac is Fire Chief Harold Munson. He is responsible for training and exercises to ensure that all aspects of the Emergency Action Plan work as smoothly and seamlessly as possible. Chief Munson and other Emergency Management agencies throughout the area coordinate efforts and resources to ensure that our community and it citizens can be informed and react accordingly in an emergency situation.

A vital part of this effort was the recent installation of new Weather Warning Sirens. With the assistance of state funding the city was able to install three (3) outdoor sirens mounted on utility poles throughout the City. It is our hope that these warning sirens will help citizens in preparing for dangerous weather conditions. Sirens are tested each month. On the third Saturday at noon the sirens will be sounded as a test only.

Another important resource for the community is the Citizen Emergency Response Teams. These volunteers have been trained and equipped to respond throughout their specific areas to provide aid until additional support teams can be dispatched.

Safety begins at home. When any type of hazardous conditions exists, keep informed by staying tuned in to local news and weather. For ideas and assistance in preparing your home and family for all types of emergencies, visit one of the following web sites for helpful information.
