Incentives
The City of Dowagiac works closely with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). Together we explore every available program to provide incentives to companies locating in Dowagiac. Current incentives which may be offered by the State of Michigan can be found on MEDC's website at www.michigan.org.

The City of Dowagiac has several programs to help foster development within the City.
For industry, the City can offer
PA 198 Property Tax Abatements
. PA 198 allows the City to grant a 50% reduction in property taxes. For real property the abatement is for 12 years. For personal property the abatement is for 6 years. The City Council of the City of Dowagiac is proactive in supporting these incentives for local businesses.

The City of Dowagiac also has established a Brownfield Redevelopment Authority. Through this Authority the City can assist with the redevelopment of contaminated sites in the community. This program may include assistance with remediation costs, infrastructure improvements, and Michigan Single Business Tax relief. Each project needs to be reviewed individually to determine eligibility for assistance.

Under the Obsolete Property Rehabilitation Act (OPRA) the City can offer tax abatements for the redevelopment of functionally obsolete property. This program allows the City to abate the property taxes on the improvements to the property for up to twelve years.
